HSDPA bei E-Plus/blau.de
Im Gegensatz zu T-Mobile, Vodafone und O2 bieten Mobilfunkanbieter, die das E-Plus-Netz nutzen (z.B. blau.de, simyo oder BASE) zwar recht interessante Preise für Sprache und Daten, aber bei der Netzabdeckung bzw. beim –ausbau hapert es dann doch manchmal noch ein wenig.
So habe ich mich natürlich wie ein Schneekönig gefreut, als ich am Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhof das 3.5G-Logo auf meinem Smartphone (Nokia E72)
Leider war’s dann aber auch gleich wieder weg, als der Zug ein paar Meter aus Stuttgart raus gefahren war. 
Naja, ich will ja nicht klagen. 10 Euro für 1 GB Traffic sind fair — im Vergleich zu den Mondpreisen, welche die anderen Anbieter an den Tag legen. Von einer Stunde WLAN am T-Mobile Hotspot für 8 Euro jetzt mal ganz zu schweigen…
Auf der Zugstrecke zwischen Stuttgart und Ulm lässt es sich übrigens auch ganz passabel mit dem Telefon surfen, zwischendurch ist immer mal wieder nur EDGE oder GPRS angesagt, aber ich bin doch begeistert, wie weit der UMTS-Ausbau schon voran gekommen ist. Ganz anders sieht es leider auf der Strecke Stuttgart—Mannheim—Frankfurt aus, da herrscht bei mir größtenteils datenmäßige Funkstille.

Google Latitude has been broken for days…
For a few days, I have been unable to connect to Google Latitude on my mobile phone. Dr. Schäuble will not be amused.
Other services such as Web, E-Mail, IRC, SSH — “everything else requiring a data connection” — do work on my phone, as does the “regular” map service of the Google Maps Mobile app. Latitude shows up correctly on iGoogle, too.
Update: At least, I am not alone with this problem. No solution in sight, though. 
Update 2: And it’s working again. Nice.

Nokia E71 vs. Palm Treo 680 comparison
I am currently using a Palm Treo 680 smartphone as a business phone.
I was thinking about getting a used iPhone (1st generation) sometimes, because my data plan only allows EDGE on the German Vodafone network. Recently I read a lot about the Nokia E71, e.g., a short review by Joel (who, by the way, writes a great blog at joelonsoftware.com which you should definitely check out if you haven’t heard about it so far) and a review on Engadget Mobile. Anyways, I also found another review of an owner who exchanged his 680 for an E71 and he seems quite happy.
As far as the software variety is concerned, there are a lot of applications for the Series 60 platform and also for Apple’s iPhone but I expect even more open-source software to be available for the S60s in the future and, to satisfy my hacking skills, I think I’ll more likely learn programming an S60 device than the iPhone (python on the S60 is another plus).
A question for my readers: Does anyone know if it’s possible to a) tether the E71 to a MacBook Pro or Thinkpad (via Bluetooth or cable) AND to tunnel non-HTTP(s) traffic, e.g., SSH connections to a designated host (listening on the SSH standard port 22) through port 80 or 443?
