Ubuntu 7.10 on Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad R61


Just as a reminder for myself…

Of course, the new company laptop came with a Windows installation, but setting up Ubuntu was far more straight forward than when I tried Fedora Core on a Toshiba Satellite M30 years ago. Although the installation instructions linked above cover the T61, most of them also work for the Lenovo Thinkpad R61.

Thinkpad-Umbau


RAM und Prozessor sind eingetroffen… Zeit, das Thinkpad einer kleinen Verjüngungskur zu unterziehen…

Die RAM-Aufrüstung habe ich nicht geknipst, das ist aber dennoch recht einfach: wenn man das Notebook umdreht, findet man in der oberen rechten Ecke eine Klappe mit Schraube. Aufmachen und voilà: 2 RAM-Bänke kommen zum Vorschein, das Einsetzen ist kein großer Unterschied zu Speicherbausteinen in “normalen” [Desktop-] PCs.

Etwas heikler ist da schon der Austausch der CPU. Da IBM das offensichtlich nicht für den Otto-Normal-Anwender vorgesehen hat, gibt es keine leicht zugänglichen Schrauben :)
