Any ideas? San Francisco, Bay Area und Umgebung?

GOOGLE PROVIDING FREE WPA2 ENCRYPTED WIFI IN MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA

GoogleWiFiSecured

As I consider myself being lucky living in Mountain View, CA (hometown of Google where they provide free wireless internet access almost everywhere) I’ve been using GoogleWifi quite a lot when I was in town, e.g. at a coffee place (Take that, Starbucks with your T-Mobile 6-dollar-per-hour Wifi!).

I just recently found out, that Google is also providing WPA2 encrypted access to their wireless network. I was not able to see the network popping up in the Airport menu (see Google’s help page for an explanation why GoogleWiFiSecure is not visible) so set up a manual connection to GoogleWiFiSecure. Before you try that, log in to the GoogleWiFi (unencrypted) network and get your Google 802.1x username and password.

Google’s WiFi comes also in very handy when our Comcast line at home just dropped again. It’s doing that a lot at the moment. Well, Comcast suggests in their commercials that their cable internet service is way faster than DSL. They don’t talk about the stability of the connection though…

ERROR MESSAGE OF THE DAY

tar: Cowardly refusing to create an empty archive

I love that kind of humor.

THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN'

A long time ago I received a chain letter e-mail (I think the title was “how to realize that you work in the 90s”) with some really funny (and true) items on a list:

  • You always dial a 0 prefix (9 in the U.S.) at home to place an “external” phone call
  • Everyone you know has at least 3 phone numbers and e-mail addresses and you’ve never seen them in person

This one became quite true for me this morning:

  • One day, you’ll go to work and all the company signs have been replaced with signs showing a different company name.

The board of management has decided (and announced this morning) to split the company, selling the part in deficit to a private equity company. Follow the news on Spiegel online, Tagesschau.de and CNN that cover most information.

I’m not yet sure how that will affect my work as I am assigned to a project that deals with both parts of the former company. I might have to use plan B right now. We’ll see.
