BACKUP YOUR INTEL MAC TO AN EXTERNAL HDD

If you have an external HDD in a USB and/or Firewire enclosure, you can make a backup of your system to this drive and can boot from that device when the worst case happens (e.g. your internal HDD crashs). I am using SuperDuper! for the backup, but there might also be other programs that do the job pretty well, e.g. CarbonCopyCloner (CCC). SuperDuper! worked best for me and is working in limited mode free of charge (only full backups are possible). If you decide to support the author by investing about 30 dollars, you will be able to save a lot of time and do incremental/diff backups.

I split my 250GB external HDD into two partitions: one has 80GB (called “Backup HD”) and is formatted with the HFS+ file system. This is the partition where you put your backup on. The other partition (which I named “DATA”) takes all of the remaining space on the hard disk (formatted with the FAT32/DOS file system), I use this partition for transferring data between other Windows or Linux computers.

Although the backup was created successfully I was unable to boot directly from the external hard drive when I still had my PowerBook G4. Now that I have an Intel Mac, I decided to re-format the external HDD and made sure I chose GUID as partition scheme. This makes the drive bootable for Intel Macs and readable/writeable for Macs and [the DATA partition] also for Linux/UNIX and Windows computers.

After running a full backup with SuperDuper! you will be able to boot from the external drive if you hold the Option/Alt key when the gray Apple logo appears during startup.

If the worst case happens (your internal drive crashes) you will be able to work with your system running on the external HDD and can restore the backup to a new internal HDD using SuperDuper!. Just choose the external drive as source and the new internal drive as destination drive.

BIOLOGICAL GIBBERISH

Hierzu wurde ein an Alkalische Phosphatase (AP) gekoppelter anti-DIG-Antikörper verwendet, bei dem die Enzymaktivität der Alkalischen Phosphatase sichtbar gemacht werden kann, indem beim Umsetzen eines zugegebenen Substrats ein farbiges Präzipitat entsteht.

PROBLEM MIT WORDPRESS 2.0.6 UND FEEDBURNER

Seit dem Update auf Version 2.0.6 mag Feedburner meinen Feed von Zeit zu Zeit nicht mehr:

FeedBurner had trouble retrieving your Source Feed: […]

The error message is: “Your server disconnected us before sending the full source feed content.”

Das Problem liegt in der Behandlung von HTTP-Status-Werten, die beim Aufrufen des Feeds zurückgegeben werden.

Eine genauere Fehlerbeschreibung und Lösung/Patches gibt es (auf englisch) hier.

Leider ist auch in der neuen Version immer noch nicht das Problem behoben worden, dass die MySQL-Verbindung nicht äber UTF-8 läuft, was hässliche Zeichen statt Umlauten etc. zur Folge hat. Das lässt sich durch editieren der Datei wp-includes/wp_db.php in der Funktion wpdb() abstellen, man muss dort einfach direkt nach der Zeile

$this->dbh = @mysql_connect($dbhost, $dbuser, $dbpassword);

folgenden Befehl einfügen:

if ($this->dbh) {

  // Let this database connection use UTF-8 encoding

  $this->query("SET NAMES utf8");

}

Damit wird direkt nach erfolgtem Aufbauen der Verbindung zur Datenbank ein SQL-Befehl abgesetzt, um den Zeichensatz bei der MySQL-Verbindung festzulegen.

BEING "RASTERFAHNDED"

Keine Frage, Kinderpornographie ist so ziemlich das widerlichste, was es gibt. Im Prinzip halte ich einige Rechtsmittel zur Bekämpfung (auch präventive) durchaus für angebracht.

Das Abgleichen von Datensätzen (und damit das unter Generalverdacht stellen) von 22 Millionen Kreditkarteninhabern in Deutschland (Artikel bei Spiegel, Heise) finde ich, nun ja sagen wir mal datenschutzrechtlich sehr bedenklich und unverhältnismäßig. Wenn ich einen Kinderporno-Ring aushebe, dann muss ich im Zuge dieses Ermittlungsverfahrens doch auch entsprechende Unterlagen sicherstellen und auf Basis dieser weiter ermitteln können. Sicherlich hätte es auch ausgereicht, bei der Bank des Zahlungsempfängers nachzuhaken.

Die gesamte Aktion macht mir einen etwas unausgegorenen Eindruck und ich bin mal gespannt, wer sich damit jetzt die Flossen verbrennt.
